Monet completed the painting during a single outdoor session. This is evident in the very surface itself. In his haste, he left areas of the canvas visible, especially in the sky, instead of covering every centimetre with paint. What a more academic painter might have regarded as unfinished here became part of the expression. The painting therefore not only depicts Camille Monet and her son Jean in the wind; it also preserves the tempo of the working process. The Impressionist idea of the fleeting moment becomes almost literal. The viewer sees both a summer scene and the traces of how swiftly the artist sought to capture light, air, and movement before everything had time to change.
