Hansen prepared the painting carefully and made painted studies of each of the seven participants. When he was to be included in the composition himself, he asked his fellow artist Albert Küchler to paint the study – a discreet collaboration in a work that otherwise bears Hansen’s name.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the beautiful painting A Group of Danish Artists in Rome created in 1837 by Constantin Hansen - a Danish painter and son of the portrait painter Hans Hansen.

In the picture we see a group of Danish artists gathered in a room in Rome, Italy. The goal of their gathering is to discuss art. Speaking from the floor, architect Gottlieb Bindesbøll tells the experiences of his recent travels in Greece.

Hansen was very ambitious when he painted this picture. He was inspired by Renaissance portrait artists and transformed them to fit the ideals of his own time. Through the doors we see the greatest source of inspiration for the artists of the time: contemporary reality. With its serious atmosphere, the painting stands out among the images of carefree Italian living, of which the Danish audience saw so many at the time.

Artist: Constantin Hansen | Created: 1837.
