The Colour Was Applied by Hand
The sheet was coloured using pochoir, a technique in which stencils were used to apply colour by hand. It gave Gazette du Bon Ton’s fashion plates a care more akin to exclusive art prints than to ordinary magazine printing. George Barbier’s image for Max-A. Leroy was therefore not merely reproduced in colour—the colouring itself was a separate craft process.

Published in the Gazette du Bon Ton, this illustration hails from an era when fashion was synonymous with art and Paris the ultimate stage. The magazine, an icon of its time, not only showcased the latest fashions from leading couturiers like Cheruit, Doucet, Lanvin, Paquin, Poiret, Redfern, and Worth but also offered satires, short stories, and critiques, embracing new trends and reflecting the extravagant lifestyle of the era's elite.
