A Track Built in Haste
It all began as a hurried diversion in 1913, when Dodge City built a two-mile dirt oval for motorcyclists on their way to a convention in Denver. The crowd-pleasing event was such a success that the city organized the 300-mile race the following year—and drew more than 10,000 spectators to a town of around 6,800 inhabitants.

The story behind the motif

Photo from the start of the iconic Dodge City 300 motorcycle race in Kansas, USA in 1914. The Dodge City 300 was the most prominent motorcycle race of the early 20th century. With a distance of 300 US miles on a dirt track, the race paved the way for future motorcycle races.

American motorcycle manufacturers raced to prove their technological superiority, and the manufacturer Harley-Davidson broke through thanks to its performance in the Dodge City 300. Their teams won in 1915, 1916, 1920 and 1921. The publicity allowed almost every Harley-Davidson dealer to report a sales increase and the factory raised its production targets for the coming season.
