Just as the Cameras Caught Up
The photograph belongs to the archive of Henriksen & Steen, an Oslo company that operated from 1922 to 1964. Around the mid-1950s, Norway’s import restrictions on photographic materials began to ease, giving professional photographers access to technology that the rest of the world had already been using for several years.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a photograph of Oslo Harbor in 1955. In the background we see several lifting cranes and to the right are typical cars lined up.

The Port of Oslo is one of Norway's oldest businesses. The port is strategically located in the heart of the Oslofjord and the hub around which Oslo was built. As early as 1735, Norway established laws regulating the operation of the port.
