A Fishing Village Since the 1500s
Tjörnekalv was no new outpost when the picture was taken: the island had permanent inhabitants since the late 16th century. During the great herring period of the 18th century, its population grew to its largest, around salteries and tar-boiling houses – an older industrial landscape behind the fishing life of the 1930s.
