The photograph belongs to the Mittet Archive, named after a Norwegian picture publisher that turned landscapes and outdoor life into postcards for a broad audience. When tens of thousands of the company’s negatives were transferred to the National Heritage Board and later the National Library, images that might otherwise have disappeared from everyday circulation were saved as well.

The story behind the motif

A man skis off-piste in a fantastic winter landscape in Norway at the beginning of the 20th century.

Scandinavians undoubtedly have a special relationship and fondness for skiing, with strong traditions that go back a long way.

The world's oldest ski was found in a bog in Västerbotten and is dated to an incredible 3,200 BC. Old documentation from the 5th century has also been found about "Skidfinnar" (Sami) who transported themselves quickly and easily across snow-covered landscapes with the help of skis. They are also depicted on runestones from the Viking Age. The first primitive downhill competition was held in 1850 in Oslo and the sport then spread to the rest of Europe and the USA.
