The World Championship Hill That Never Hosted a World Championship
Gausta’s new competition hill had been built for the 1940 World Championships in skiing, with the alpine events planned for Rjukan while Holmenkollen would host the Nordic disciplines. The championships, scheduled for 25 February–3 March, were cancelled because of the war in Europe. Instead, smaller Telemark races were held in February, with Crown Prince Olav in attendance.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a photograph of three men on a skiing holiday during the Easter weekend in Gausta, Norway. The men stand in the snow with skis on and are probably taking a break in the sun while skiing. 

The photo was taken by the Norwegian photographer Anders Beer Wilse and is from 1940. Anders Beer Wilse was an important photographer, known for his black and white images that documented both nature and people's everyday life in Norway.
