The Year the Jumping Was Cancelled
1954 was an unusual year at Holmenkollen: the regular ski-jumping competition was cancelled, one of only a few cancelled jumping events since the 1890s. At the same time, women were allowed to compete in the official ten-kilometre event for the first time—a small but significant step into Holmenkollen’s programme.

The story behind the motif

Poster of a ski jumping competition in Holmenkollen just outside Oslo, Norway in 1954. A large crowd has gathered to watch. 

Holmenkollen is one of the world's most famous and oldest ski jumps. It was inaugurated in 1892 and is today one of Norway's most visited tourist attractions. Even Crown Prince Olav took part in the ski jumping competition in 1922 and 1923.
