About the pair
Marcus Elieser Bloch’s fish illustrations rank among the great natural history pictorial works of the 18th century. The pike and the perch are rendered with the same care: their form, fins, and markings are documented almost scientifically, yet with a precision that also makes the images decorative.
When displayed together, their kinship becomes clear. The same visual language, the same light background, and two species from the same Nordic waters create a calm series rather than two separate motifs – like two plates from a historic natural history atlas.
