About the pair
August Strindberg is best known as a writer, but his painting holds a distinct place of its own in Swedish art history. In The Town and Landscape Study, the landscape that fascinated him returns: weather, horizon, masses of colour, and nature that almost seems to be in motion.
The two paintings work especially well together because they reveal different sides of the same painterly temperament. One introduces human settlement into the image; the other lets the landscape take over. The same raw energy and mood-laden palette unite them into a distinctly Strindberg wall.
