Howard Hughes had an alternative ending filmed to appease the censors, but several states still said no. After months of dispute, the film was released on 9 April 1932; in New York it was also given the title Scarface, the Shame of a Nation. The gangster film had become a debate about film censorship before audiences had even seen it.
