The same pattern, several lives
Kennet lived several lives: as wallpaper, woven silk and printed cotton. When the material, surface and colourway changed, so did the expression, even though the underlying design remained the same. The preserved cotton print in Cleveland dates from around 1920, but the design was registered as early as 18 October 1883.

The story behind the motif

Poster featuring Kennet, a William Morris pattern registered in 1883 and named after the River Kennet in southern England. The distinct diagonal rhythm, the large flowers, and the dense foliage give the motif a rich textile character that works both decoratively and graphically.

William Morris (1834–1896) was not only a designer but also a knowledgeable collector and student of historic textiles. The Cleveland Museum of Art notes how Kennet bears traces of older Italian velvet that Morris studied in museums. The pattern was later produced in several materials and colorways, making it unusually adaptable even in its own time. This is also part of Morris’s enduring appeal: his patterns are historically grounded yet created as functional decoration, which is why they still fit naturally into today’s interiors.

Artist: William Morris (1834–1896) | Created: 1883.
