The story behind the motif
Poster featuring Marigold by William Morris from 1875. Large flowers emerge among winding leaves across a denser field of smaller floral forms. The repetitive composition gives the motif a calm rhythm, while the botanical richness of detail ensures the image continues to reveal itself at close range.
William Morris (1834–1896) designed wallpapers and textiles as part of his vision of uniting art, everyday life, and fine craftsmanship. His close studies of plants became central to the Arts and Crafts aesthetic still associated with his name today. Marigold was hand block-printed and offered in several colorways. It is precisely this blend of historic craftsmanship, organic forms, and clear graphic structure that makes Morris’s patterns so decorative in both older and more pared-back interiors.
