Four Years in Secret
In Dalarö in 1885, Zorn painted this watercolour in the same year that he and Emma Lamm, after four years of a secret engagement, were able to marry. The Nationalmuseum also highlights it as evidence of the strong interest in Japanese visual culture that shaped the artistic world at the time.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the watercolor painting Luftslott by the iconic Swedish artist Anders Zorn. During the 1880s, Zorn worked primarily in watercolor. He skilfully depicted reflections and other light effects in images of everyday life.

The woman in the picture is Emma Lamm who married Zorn the same year the watercolor is painted. Most likely, Zorn painted the painting during their wedding trip that went through Vienna and Budapest to Constantinople. The sun shines through Emma's Japanese parasol.
