The story behind the motif
The picture shows a construction worker during the construction of the Empire State Building in New York in 1930. Over 3,000 workers were employed on the construction. The construction work was hard and extremely risky. Particularly noteworthy were the groups that worked with riveting . These were often Mohawkers who set hundreds of rivets per day and threw metal parts at each other at a height of 300 meters over a distance of 40 meters. The official death toll is five, but according to various accounts it was up to three times as many. The Empire State Building was inaugurated in 1931.
