The story behind the motif
Poster with the 1807 painting, Friedland, created by Ernest Meissonier - a French painter. For Meissonier, detailed historical accuracy became a passion, as we see in this painting depicting one of Napoleon Bonaparte's greatest victories.
Meissonier spent a large part of his time getting information confirmed. As a result, he painted only two paintings, out of the planned five, of scenes from Napoleon Buonaparte's career.
This work is the largest and most ambitious painting. Meissonier made hundreds of preparatory studies for it, including drawings and sculptural models. He conceived the picture as part of a cycle of five key episodes in the Emperor's life, of which only one other was completed – the Campaign of France , 1814.
