46 years to the museum
The painting had to wait 46 years for its place in a museum. Siegwald Dahl painted it in 1868, but the Nasjonalmuseet did not register it until 1914 – as a bequest from N. Møller. A small work with an unusually clear path from private ownership to the national collection.

The story behind the motif

The artwork A Fox was created in 1868 by the Norwegian-German artist Siegwald Dahl, who mainly devoted himself to animal painting. The painting shows a fox looking at its surroundings through the forest, surrounded by tall reeds. The fox looks out at the water and at the ducks that swim and fly away further away from the reeds.

The work shows muted colors, with a sky that shifts between blue and pink. Sunbeams penetrate the tall straws and illuminate the ground.
