In Beskow’s ABC-resan from 1945, Å and Ä share a spread, while Ö gets to close the book on its own. The rhymed story is constructed as a journey through the alphabet, and only on the final page can the children conclude that they have in fact learned the entire ABC.

The story behind the motif
Poster with a nostalgic illustration from the book ABC-resan by Elsa Beskow from 1945.

The book was used to teach children the alphabet in an entertaining and educational way, as each letter is linked to a picture and a short rhyme. In this image, the letters Å & Ä are presented, which are illustrated with the children testing oars along a river, and with an earl down in the left corner. 

Elsa Beskow was a Swedish author and illustrator, known for her imaginative children's books that often contain educational elements. In her book "ABC-resan" you can follow Anna and Bo as they discover the world and at the same time get through the alphabet.
