Painted by a Rear Admiral
Jacob Hägg did not paint the navy from a distance. Before becoming a rear admiral, he had sailed around the world aboard the steam frigate Vanadis and worked for eleven years at the hydrographic office. The many sketches from his life at sea make his ship paintings more than romantic marine scenes – they carry professional knowledge.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting "Angler huntingby the Swedish artist Jacob Hägg (1839-1931)

The painting was made around the 1880s and shows the duck hunt Hong Kong seen from the starboard bow. In the background you can see an archipelago with rocky islands, a sea mark and a lighthouse, as well as several sailing yachts.

Jacob Hägg was educated at the Royal Academy of Liberal Arts in Stockholm and was later employed as a teacher there. He was a diligent artist and his work was characterized by a naturalistic style with a strong focus on light and atmosphere. Hägg's artistry spanned several decades and he was an important part of the Swedish 19th century's artistic development.
