April the Trickster
In Årets saga from 1927, Elsa Beskow lets April speak for itself – and boast about fooling children with sudden changes in the weather and unexpected scoldings. The image belongs to a rhymed chronicle of the year in which each month is given its own voice and personality, rather than merely marking the passage of time.

The story behind the motif

A classic poster illustrated by Elsa Beskow from Saga of the year in 1927 with the motif April.

Årets saga is a classic picture book by Elsa Beskow from 1927 that deals with the seasons with rhyming text and detailed illustrations. The book depicts how the year passes in home and nature, with verses describing each month. It is one of Beskow's best-known books and a popular read-aloud book for children.

In the book it says: April, April! "Dear sippers, don't sit still! The sun is shining on rice and bushes, out on the hill, it's spring! — Oh, a downpour! — 'April, April! I can fool you all I want!' Don't laugh, it's your fault, April, you can do what you want! Soon we'll make a fire, rubbish and old rice, when it's gone, April, you don't want to!

Elsa Beskow's fairy tales and illustrations have become classics in Swedish children's literature. She is one of Sweden's most beloved authors and illustrators of all time.
