Åre stood on the brink of its great alpine breakthrough. Two years later, the resort’s first cable car was built, and in 1954 it hosted the Alpine World Championships – the competitions that brought Åre international attention and helped shape its reputation as a skiing metropolis.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a photograph of Sarah Thomasson and Åke Nilsson in the 1950s. In the picture we see them in the ski lift on the way up to Mörvikhummeln in Åre.

Sarah Thomasson (1925-1996) and Åke Nilsson (1927-1991) were both successful in alpine skiing during the 1950s.
