Too Expensive for the People
The plate was part of Elias Fries’s mushroom work, created to help the public distinguish edible mushrooms from poisonous ones. But the coloured plates became so costly that, according to a parliamentary memorandum from 1901, the work never reached “the deeper layers of the people” – despite the fact that lack of knowledge was considered the problem.

The story behind the motif

Poster featuring a beautiful, classic illustration from the book Sweden's Edible and Poisonous Mushrooms which was published in series between the years 1860-1866 by Elias Fries. 

Elias Fries (1794-1878) was a Swedish botanist and mycologist and a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences.
