When the Image Became the Evidence
Before mushroom guides existed, such depictions served as scientific references. Elias Fries believed that fleshy mushrooms could not be preserved reliably in a herbarium, and therefore had artists paint them under his careful supervision. The series was issued in ten parts from 1860 to 1866 and is considered Sweden’s first illustrated mushroom book.
