A Diplomatic Gift
Autumn was not painted as an independent curiosity but formed part of a series that Emperor Maximilian II probably commissioned in 1573 for Elector August of Saxony. The gift carried political weight: that same year, August supported the election of Maximilian’s son Rudolf as King of the Romans. After the series disappeared from the Dresden collections, it was not found again until around 1950.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting "Autumn" by the Italian Renaissance painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo (1527-1593), who is known for his imaginative portraits in which he uses objects such as fruit, flowers and books to recreate faces.

The painting was made in 1573 and is part of a series representing the four seasons. "Autumn" is one of the most famous in the series and depicts the autumn harvest with a composition of fruits and vegetables, providing a visual expression of the season's rich resources.

Giuseppe Arcimboldo was born in Milan and worked in Italy and Austria, where he was part of the imperial court under Emperor Maximilian II. His artwork reflected the Renaissance interest in natural science, botany, and zoology, and his detailed depictions of nature were part of the scientific developments of this period.
