The story behind the motif
The poster advertised train travel to the Auvergne region, particularly to spa towns such as Vichy, Royat and Châtel-Guyon, which were popular destinations during the Belle Époque period. The motif shows a woman holding a red parasol and riding a donkey, surrounded by children in period dress. This poster is part of the Les Maîtres de l'Affiche series, a collection of 240 posters published between 1895 and 1900 to preserve and disseminate the work of prominent poster artists.
A central figure during the French Belle Époque period, Chéret played a crucial role in the development of commercial poster art. He was inspired by Rococo artists such as Jean-Honoré Fragonard and Antoine Watteau, which was reflected in the elegant and playful style of his posters.
