The Mountains in Wartime’s Shadow
When the picture was taken, Björkliden’s young tourist venture lay in the shadow of war. Hotel Fjället had opened just four years earlier, in 1939, but after Germany landed in Narvik on 9 April 1940, tourism declined and the hotel was taken over by the Swedish Army. Development did not pick up again until after the war.

The story behind the motif

Poster with an old photograph of the Swedish mountain world. In the areas around Björkliden , people are enjoying the spring winter.

In the photo we see Iris and Bertil Thorelli doing gymnastics on the roof of the cottage in the sunshine. Bertil is called up and does military service in the mountain areas, and he and his wife live in one of Björkliden's cabins during this period. They are both dressed in period bathing suits.

The photo is one of the photos taken in connection with the photo reportage "Tourist station", which was published in Se no:15 in 1943.
