At the heart of a three-year reading series
Svarta Sara was not part of a standalone storybook, but of the second volume in a continuous reading series. Vill du läsa? was published in three volumes between 1935 and 1937, created by Elsa Beskow and Herman Siegvald. The image thus became a small part of a carefully staged path through the first years of school reading.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a beautiful illustration from Elsa Beskow's children's book " Do you want to read? 2 - Second school year" which was first published in 1936.

The picture shows en little black kitten sits next to a jug and puts its paw on it, as if examining it curiously. The image is simple and calm, with the cat in focus against a light background.

Elsa Beskow (1874–1953) was a Swedish writer and illustrator who became one of the country's most influential picture book creators. Beskow was known for his warm depictions of children, home and nature. She often illustrated her own texts and her visual world has a strong connection to everyday environments and romantic nature.

Do you want to read? is a reading book/reading learning series for the first school years, created by Elsa Beskow together with the pedagogue Herman Siegvald. The second part, Do you want to read? 2 - The second school year, was published in the first edition in 1936 by the Swedish book publisher Norstedt in Stockholm.

Artist: Elsa Beskow | Created: 1936.
