Blossfeldt’s plant images were initially intended as teaching material for design students in Berlin, not as art photography. He modified his camera for extreme enlargements, and when the images were exhibited in 1926, the artistic avant-garde quickly took notice.

The story behind the motif

Poster with an illustration of Karl Blossfeldt (1865-1932) who was a German photographer and sculptor. He is best known for his close-up photographs of plants and living creatures. He was inspired, like his father, by nature and the way plants grow.

This illustration shows a stylized plant with a strong, smooth stem and symmetrically arranged leaves that extend like branches in several levels.

The images, originally used as teaching material by Blossfeldt when he taught sculpture, became major artistic works after he received a scholarship to systematically photograph plants. They were published in the influential books Urformen der Kunst (1928) and Wundergarten der Natur (1932) and combined elements of Art Nouveau and Modernism.
