In the 19th century, boxing acquired its modern framework: the Queensberry Rules of 1867 required gloves, prohibited wrestling and established three-minute rounds with one minute of rest. The rules were initially written for amateur bouts, but became the template for the sport we know today.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the illustration Boxing from the literary series The Badminton Library of Sports and Pastimes. In the picture we see two men ready to box with their fists up in front of their bodies. Below them we see the title text Figure 1 - On Guard.

The book series The Badminton Library of Sports and Pastimes was a project initiated by Henry Somerset, 8th Duke of Beaufort (1824–1899). The series was published in installments between 1885 and 1902 and included all major sports and leisure activities.
