An Attribution with a Question Mark
The 1886 print has a shared—and partly uncertain—attribution. The Met attributes the image to Herman Stahmer, but identifies the New York-based firm Schumacher & Ettlinger as the lithographer. It is a small piece of advertising ephemera in which both the designer and the printer can still be traced.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a vintage poster for Brewster & Co. Annual Exhibition of Carriages from 1886. On the poster we see a stylish illustration of a man and a horse with a carriage.

Brewster & Co was an American coachbuilder with operations in New York. The company was started by James Brewster in 1810 to build horse-drawn carriages. At the beginning of the 20th century, Brewster became a dealer for several European car manufacturers and then began building car bodies. When Rolls-Royce opened a factory in Springfield, Massachusetts, Brewster became the main supplier of bodies.
