When the seaweed became the printing plate
The source came from one of the nineteenth century’s most unusual botanical methods: a real seaweed specimen was pressed between steel and lead to create a mould for the printing plate. Henry Bradbury then coloured the plate and transferred the impression to paper. The series, written by William Grosart Johnstone and Alexander Croall, was published in 1859–1860.

The story behind the motif
In 1859, the English printer Henry Bradbury published The Nature-printed British Sea-weeds . In this poster we see the illustration British Seaweeds 033.
Bradbury was quick to begin using the method of "nature printing" - a process of using plant or animal material to create a print. The process had previously been developed by the Austrian printer Alois Auer.
Bradbury placed the subject between two smooth and polished plates, one of steel and one of lead, which were then pulled through a pair of rollers. When the plates were then separated, an impression had been made on the lead plate, which was then hand colored and transferred to the final print.
At the lower left edge of the poster we can see the text " Nature printed by Henry Bradbury ".
