The story behind the motif
Poster featuring the hand-coloured Japanese print Cherry Blossom, attributed to the photographer and printer Kazumasa Ogawa and dated to around 1887–1897.
The motif depicts blossoming cherry branches in a delicate composition, where the pale flowers stand out against a muted background. The print was produced using collotype and coloured by hand.
The image was published in the illustrated work Japan Described and Illustrated by the Japanese, where photography and artisanal colouration were combined to present Japanese nature and culture.
