It was printed as a centre spread in the American satirical magazine Puck on Christmas Eve 1902. The presents were not merely festive details, but sharp and personal jabs at the magazine’s recurring characters – a little year in review in Christmas format.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a classic Christmas motif by the American illustrator J. Ottman from 1902. Today the original is at the Library of Congress in the USA.

This image has an amazing wealth of detail - one can look at it for hours. Women, men and children of different backgrounds and professions have gathered around a magnificent tree and receive Christmas presents from a little Santa. There is a lot of humor in the picture - which professional groups get which Christmas presents and they are happy, surprised or dissatisfied.
