When the Story Became an Image
The race could become an image even when Crosby had not seen it. For The Autocar, colleague Sammy Davis recounted the events, while Crosby translated the story into charcoal, ink, pastel or oil. His motorsport images were journalism with memory – and the deadline – as camera.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the illustration "Crosby", a work by Frederick Gordon Crosby (1885-1943) who was a British artist known for his dynamic and dramatic depictions of early motor racing.

The image captures an intense scene from a car race, probably in the early 1900s when cars were still new and experimental. It was also during this period that car racing began to be organized. In the image we see that it is a white rocket-shaped car that is in the lead. The car has the number twelve and the American flag on it.

Crosby was an illustrator for the British motoring magazine The Autocar and is known for his depictions of speed, movement and technical detail. His work was often romanticized and helped shape the heroic image of motorsport in its early decades.
