At The Autocar, Gordon Crosby could create a racing scene without having been there himself: his colleague and racing driver Sammy Davis recounted the race, and Crosby translated the story into charcoal, ink or colour. Motorsport’s visual memory was often born from quick sketches and verbal reports rather than photographs.

The story behind the motif
