The Curious Perch

The curious perch, which was published in 1933, is a beloved children's book by Elsa Beskow that tells the exciting story of the little perch Kvick, whose curiosity leads him on an adventure out of the ordinary. Kvikk lives in the lake with her friends Aunt Red Plaice, Uncle Bream and Uncle Pike, who have all told stories about the strange creatures that walk on two legs - the humans. These creatures, which the older fishermen warned about, arouse both fear and fascination in Kvick.

Despite the warnings, Kvick cannot resist his curiosity, and one day he becomes too brave for his own good. He gets caught on a hook and is pulled out of his safe water by a little boy named Thomas. Thomas, who is a kind and curious boy, places Kvick in a jar aquarium, where the perch quickly feels trapped and unhappy.

With the help of an old frog fairy, who possesses magical powers, Kvikk's friends are transformed into land-dwelling creatures with legs and the ability to breathe air. They head to Thomas' home to rescue their friend. Once they explain to Thomas how badly Kvick is doing, he immediately releases him back into the lake. As thanks, the frog teaches Thomas to swim, and soon he can swim as well as the fish themselves. The story ends with all parties returning home satisfied, and Kvick learns the value of both curiosity and caution.

Elsa Beskow, known for her enchanting stories and detailed illustrations, creates here a fairy tale filled with natural romance and warmth. The book carries a message about respecting other living beings and about the importance of following your curiosity but at the same time listening to the advice given by those with more experience.
