To get the setting right, 20th Century Fox sent screenwriter Kathryn Scola to the Barbizon Hotel in New York for two weeks. The real hotel was built for single women seeking work and an independent life in the metropolis – and offered facilities for artistic training and rehearsal, among other things.

The story behind the motif
Poster of the movie Det Svaga Könet (Hotel for Women) which opened in theaters in 1939. Actress Linda Darnells made her film debut in this leading role and became an overnight star.

The poster depicts the adventures of a young woman in a women's hotel in New York and became a classic by combining romance, drama and a unique insight into the lives of women in the 1930s.

The title The Weaker Sex and Darnell's strong lead role challenges the then-contemporary stereotypical notions of women and their role in society as more vulnerable and less capable than men.
