The studio that opened Paris
Edelfelt kept his studio at 147 Avenue de Villiers in Paris from 1880 until his death in 1905. From there he built an international network that became a guide for other Finnish artists—and in 1886 the French state bought his portrait of Louis Pasteur after its success at the Salon.

The story behind the motif

Canvas with the beautiful sketch Detail study of a hand, created by Albert Edelfelt. The image is part of a larger collection of sketches of hands.

Albert Edelfelt was a Finnish-Swedish painter and illustrator. He illustrated Runeberg's poems, among other things. Edelfelt was married to Ellen de la Chapelle (1857-1921), and together had a son Erik Edelfelt (1888-1910), who died childless. At his wife's request, the family moved from Paris to Helsinki in 1891. Edelfelt is buried at Sandudd's burial ground.

Artist: Albert Edelfelt | Created: 19th century.
