Around 1950, diesel became the railway’s great time-saver. Steam locomotives normally needed attention about every hundred miles, while diesel locomotives could run an entire rail route without changing engines. It was one of the practical advantages that quickly made the old steam technology difficult to defend.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a photograph of an American diesel locomotive in the 1950s. The viewing perspective is from below, giving a fantastic effect of the locomotive towering over the railway.

The locomotive belonged to the Rock Island railroad company in Chicago. The song "Rock Island Line", a late 1920s spiritual first recorded in 1934, was inspired by the railroad.
