The Poster Became a Collector’s Print
In 1895, Divan Japonais was issued as print number 2 in the series Les Maîtres de l’Affiche—a lavish collector’s edition that turned street posters into something one could collect in portfolios. Jules Chéret was the publisher, while Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec created the original image.

The story behind the motif
Poster with the illustration Divan Japonais created in 1894 by French artist Jules Chéret (1836- 1932), who was a French painter and graphic artist.

The poster advertises a cabaret or entertainment establishment named Divan Japonais , which was a popular venue for music, dancing, and entertainment.

A central figure during the French Belle Époque period, Chéret played a crucial role in the development of commercial poster art. He was inspired by Rococo artists such as Jean-Honoré Fragonard and Antoine Watteau, which was reflected in the elegant and playful style of his posters.
