A Road Older Than the Car
The journey across Dovre followed an ancient link between Eastern Norway and Trøndelag. Mountain lodges for travellers already existed here in the 12th century, while the stretch of road along the Driva followed by today’s European route was not built until 1851–1853. When the picture was taken around 1960, the same passage had become an unquestioned road for cars through the mountains.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a vintage photograph of a car being driven at Dovre - a Norwegian mountain range. Dovre's highest point is Snøhetta, 2,286 meters above sea level. The Dovrebanan railway line runs from Oslo to Trondheim over Dovre's mountain ranges, as does Europaväg 6 between Trelleborg and Kirkenes.

In 2002, Dovrefjell National Park was significantly expanded with the formation of Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella National Park. The area is protected to preserve nature and the rich plant and animal life.
