Seventeen steps to the salon
According to a technical art-historical examination, Edelfelt developed it through at least 17 painted or drawn preparatory studies. When the painting was shown at the Paris Salon in 1877, it marked his artistic breakthrough and gave the young artist an international stage.

The story behind the motif

Canvas with a beautiful painting created by Albert Edelfelt in 1877. The painting is called Queen Blanka and is one of Edelfelt's most famous paintings.

The painting, which depicts a woman with a small child in her lap, illustrates Zacharias Topelius' story The Nine Silver Pennies about Queen Blanca of Namur and Prince Håkan .

As a 19-year-old, Edelfelt went to Antwerp in 1873 to study history painting and continued his painting studies in Paris the following year. It was then in Paris, in 1877, that Edelfelt created this painting.

Artist: Albert Edelfelt | Created: 1877.
