A Possible Workshop Painting
Nationalmuseum considers that the painting may be an unfinished study, despite its meticulous rendering. It may have been used by the artist’s son and assistant, Claude‑François Desportes, and it has also previously been suggested that someone else painted the background. A small work that may thus bear traces of several hands.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting "Rabbits" by the artist Alexandre-François Desportes from the 1720s. 

The painting depicts three rabbits in a natural environment, with one of them standing on its hind legs. The image captures the details of the rabbits' fur and their natural conditions, reflecting Desportes' skill in depicting animals in realistic and vivid situations. 

Alexandre-François Desportes (1661–1743) was a French painter, known for his realistic and detailed paintings of animals. He was a leading exponent of French Baroque animal painting and was particularly appreciated for his still lifes and hunting motifs. Desportes was also a court painter to the French royal family and his works often reflected the noble lifestyle and their relationship with hunting and nature.
