The story behind the motif
Poster with the painting "Earth" by the Italian Renaissance painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo (1527-1593), who is known for his imaginative portraits in which he uses objects such as fruit, flowers and books to recreate faces.
The painting dates from 1566 and is a portrait of a human figure, in which animals such as deer, lions and sheep are carefully arranged to form facial features. "Earth" is Part of the Elements series.
Giuseppe Arcimboldo was born in Milan and worked in Italy and Austria, where he was part of the imperial court under Emperor Maximilian II. His artwork reflected the Renaissance interest in natural science, botany, and zoology, and his detailed depictions of nature were part of the scientific developments of this period.
