The Square That Was Left Over
Egertorget was never laid out as a square. The space remained as a leftover area when the former Slotsveien was connected to Østre Gade in 1846—a reconstruction that required Stabellgården to be demolished. The name comes from merchant Ole Eger, who lived by the site as early as 1804.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a lovely cityscape of Egertorget in Oslo at the beginning of the 20th century.

Egertorget is located in central Oslo and is crossed by Karl Johans gate and Øvre slottsgate. The square is named after two brothers who were brewery owners - Herman (1816-1863) and Thorvald (1827-1901) Eger. On Egertorget is Horngården, which was built in 1929 and was Oslo's first high-rise building with eight floors.

Today, Egertorget is a shopping area with many of Oslo's most popular stores.
