The Skier Behind the Camera
Anders Beer Wilse did not merely take winter photographs in passing: he was himself a dedicated skier with a camera, and left behind an entire series of photographs of snow, trees and ski tracks. When the picture was taken in 1910, he had already become a leading figure in a more narrative kind of photography in the Norwegian press.

Anders Beer Wilse was a Norwegian photographer who documented Norway in the early to mid-20th century and also worked in the United States. Wilse was born in Flekkefjord, but grew up in Kragerø and decided early on to become a sailor. After graduating from the technical school in Horten in 1882, he emigrated to the United States in 1884.
