A canvas anchored in the shore stones
The canvas, more than two metres wide, was partly painted outdoors at Haiko and had to be anchored in the shore stones so that storms would not tear it loose. It became Edelfelt’s first large work painted partly outdoors – and the following year it was awarded a third-class medal at the Paris Salon.

The story behind the motif

Beautiful poster with the painting "A Child's Funeral" created in 1879 by Albert Edelfelt.

In the picture we see a quiet and moving scene where a small coffin containing a child's body is carried to its final resting place in a rowboat. There are six people in the boat: three women, two men and a girl, all dressed in formal clothes. They are depicted on a mirror-like lake outside Haiko, near Porvoo, on a sunny late summer morning.

Albert Edelfelt (1854–1905) was a Finnish artist and one of the most prominent and internationally renowned painters from Finland during the 19th century. He is particularly known for his portraits and genre (everyday life) paintings, as well as for his contribution to Finnish artistic development during that period.

Artist: Albert Edelfelt | Created: 1879.
