The source image formed part of William Forsell Kirby’s European Butterflies and Moths from 1882, a British adaptation of Friedrich Berge’s German Schmetterlingsbuch. The book contained 61 hand-coloured plates – images that were first printed and then given their colours by hand.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a beautiful vintage illustration from the book European Butterflies and Moths by William Forsell Kirby, published 1882. 

Published in Great Britain, the book is a comprehensive study of the butterflies and moths of Europe, and contains many colorful illustrations of these insects. The illustration gives an insight into the life cycle of butterflies, as we see different stages of development from larvae to fully grown butterflies.

William Forsell Kirby (1844–1912) was an English entomologist and author. He was an expert on butterflies and moths and wrote several works that had a major impact on entomological science. The books "European Butterflies and Moths" are considered important contributions to the study of insect life during the 19th century.
