Before the Lens Took Over
In 1832, the lighthouse still shone with an open coal fire at the top of the tower. Just ten years later, it was converted into a dioptric lighthouse: the fire was replaced by a lantern, lens apparatus and oil lamp. The image thus belongs to the brief period when the building functioned more like a controlled beacon fire than the modern lighthouse it would later become.

The story behind the motif
Poster with a beautiful drawing of Falsterbo lighthouse from 1832. On the picture we see the text "To change of Falsterbo lighthouse from open to closed coal lighthouse.".
Falsterbo lighthouse rises high above the landscape on the southernmost part of Falsterbonäset. It has guided mariners since 1796 and is one of the country's oldest lighthouses. The lighthouse has a special design with a strong bottom part in two floors and a sturdy round tower, crowned by a glass lantern. It was designed by one of the most prominent architects of the time, Olof Tempelman.
Today's lighthouse was preceded by a much simpler type of lighthouse, a so-called tilting lighthouse, which had stood at Kolabacken, just north of the lighthouse.
